The Halle power plant, Dieselstrasse, is a combined heat and power plant in Halle which was commissioned in 1972 and was modernized in 2004/2005 . It can cover Halle's entire district heating needs. The power plant operated by Energieversorgung Halle GmbH (EVH), a company of Stadtwerke Halle , has a 180 meter high chimney; this is the tallest structure in Halle. The modernization cost 70 million euros. The power plant is a combined heat and power plant based on the principle of combined heat and power . It has two identical blocks, each with a 29 MW gas turbine and an 18 MW steam turbine . The district heating output is 34 MW without and 80 MW with additional firing. The EVH gives the electrical efficiency with 44% and the fuel efficiency with 88 to 89%.

A district heating storage system has also been in operation at the Dieselstrasse location since 2006 to optimize daily use of the power plant. The reservoir is 22 meters high and has the same diameter. It has a volume of 6,800 m³, which corresponds to a heat capacity of around 280 MWh.

In 2017, the construction of another, much larger district heating storage facility with a capacity of 50,000 cubic meters began. This was put into operation on September 20, 2018. In addition, the district heating network is to be expanded and the power plant is to be modernized at the same time. With the heat storage system, which makes it possible to decouple electricity and heat production, it is now possible to operate the power plant with electricity instead of heat. This means that it can be better used to compensate for the fluctuating production of regenerative producers . The power plant can be operated by the storage system especially when there is high demand for electricity (and electricity production is worthwhile), but does not have to run if large amounts of wind or solar electricity are already being produced.
