The Itutinga power plant ( Portuguese Usina Hidrelétrica de Itutinga or UHE Itutinga ) is a hydropower plant in the state of Minas Gerais , Brazil , which dams the Rio Grande to the Itutinga Reservoir ( Portuguese Reservatório UHE Itutinga ). The Camargos power plant is located around five kilometers upstream .

Construction began in 1952. The power plant was inaugurated on April 11, 1955 by the then governor of Minas Gerais Juscelino Kubitschek . The power plant is owned by Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (CEMIG) and is also operated by CEMIG.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a dam on the left and a dam with a weir on the right. The maximum height indicated is 23 (or 25) m. The length of the barrier structure is 550 m. The weir system with the flood relief , consisting of 5 gates, is on the right. Between the dam and the weir there is an approx. 150 m long canal that leads to the machine house.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 885 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.64 km² and holds 11 (or 11.4) million m³ of water - of which 6.5 (or 7) million m³ can be used to generate electricity become. The minimum congestion target is 880 m, the maximum is 886 m.

power plant

The Itutinga power plant has 4 machines and an installed capacity of 52 MW . The first two machines were commissioned on April 11, 1955, the last two on September 17, 1959 and April 24, 1960.

The 4 Kaplan turbines were supplied by S. Morgan Smith and the associated generators by Westinghouse . The power plant's turbines have two outputs of 12.5 and one each of 13 and 14 MW. The rated speed of the turbines is 225 rpm. The nominal voltage of the generators is 6.9  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 6.9 kV is increased to 138 kV using power transformers.

The maximum flow rate ( expansion water volume ) is 53 m³ / s each for turbines 1 and 2 and 63 m³ / s each for turbines 3 and 4.
