The power plant Luís Carlos Barreto de Carvalho ( Portuguese Usina Hidrelétrica Luís Carlos Barreto de Carvalho ), originally called the power plant Estreito ( port.Usina de Estreito ), is a run-of-river power plant in Brazil that turns the Rio Grande into a reservoir ( port.Represa do Estreito ) accumulates. At this point, the Rio Grande forms the border between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo . The town of Franca is located about 30 kilometers southwest of the power plant .

The project to build the power plant began in 1962. The first machine went online in March 1969.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a rock embankment with a clay core. On the right side is the flood relief , consisting of 6 gates with a width of 11.5 m and a height of 16.5 m. A maximum of 13,000 m³ / s can be discharged. The machine house is on the left. The maximum height of the barrier structure is 92 m, the length of the dam crown 535 m and the width of the crown 15.8 m. The top of the dam is at an altitude of 629 m above sea level . The volume of the structure is 4,290,000 m³.

Reservoir

At the normal storage target of 622.5 m (in the event of a flood, 626.64 m are possible), the reservoir extends over an area of around 46.7 km² and holds 1.418 billion m³ of water, of which only 0.178 billion m³ is used to generate electricity can be used. The minimum stowage destination at which the machines can still be operated is 618.5 m. The reservoir target of the reservoir is usually relatively constant, as the water flow of the Rio Grande is controlled by the upstream Furnas power station with the associated Furnas reservoir .

power plant

The Luís Carlos Barreto de Carvalho power plant, with an installed capacity of 1,050  MW, is the fifth largest power plant operated by the electricity producer Furnas Centrais Elétricas . The average annual production fluctuates: in 2007 it was 3.852 billion kWh and in 2009 it was 4.968 billion kWh.

The 6 Francis turbines , each with a maximum output of 175 MW, are located in a machine house at the foot of the left side of the dam. All machines went online in 1969. The turbines were supplied by Voith and the generators by ASEA . The rated speed of the turbines is 112.5 / min. The associated generators have a nominal voltage of 13.8  kV and a nominal frequency of 60 Hz. The diameter of a rotor is 5.8 m.

In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 13.8 kV is increased to 345 kV by means of single-phase power transformers. The switchgear is on the left side of the river.

The power plant is owned by Furnas Centrais Elétricas and is also operated by Furnas.

Others

From 2005 to 2011, an overhaul of the six machines and the replacement of outdated technology were carried out for a total of R $ 450 million .
