The Jaguara power plant ( Portuguese Usina Hidrelétrica de Jaguara ) is a hydropower plant in Brazil that dams the Rio Grande to the Jaguara Reservoir ( Portuguese Represa de Jaguara ). At this point, the Rio Grande forms the border between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo . Rifaina municipality is located about 10 kilometers upstream .

In 1962 the electricity producer CEMIG commissioned the CANAMBRA consortium to investigate the hydropower potential of the states of Minas Gerais and Goiás . As a result, u. a. the construction of the Jaguara power station is recommended. Construction began in 1966. In 1971 operations began.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a dam on the right and a dam on the left. The maximum height given is 40 or 71 m. There are also different specifications for the length of the barrier structure: it is 325 or 438 m. The dam is divided into a machine house and a weir system with flood relief , consisting of 6 gates.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 558.5 m, the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 30 km² and holds 470 million m³ of water - 90 million m³ of this can be used to generate electricity. The minimum stowage destination at which the machines can still be operated is 555.5 m.

At the reservoir, which is up to 40 m deep in some places, diving is practiced in addition to various water sports. Various types of fish such as pintado , cascudo or tucunaré can be found in the lake .

With an installed capacity of 424  MW, the Jaguara power plant is the fourth largest power plant operated by the electricity producer CEMIG .

A total of 4 machines with a maximum output of 108 (or 118) MW each are installed. You are in a machine house on the left side of the dam. The original design of the power plant offers space for the installation of two more machines. The Francis turbines were supplied by MHI and the associated generators by Siemens . The switchgear is on the left side of the river.

The power plant is owned and operated by CEMIG.

CEMIG approached the IBRD for a loan in July 1965 . The World Bank estimated the total cost of Jaguara in 1966 at US $ 90 million (or US $ 165 per installed kW , which the World Bank considered a reasonable value). The World Bank granted Centrais Eletricas de Minas Gerais a loan of US $ 49 million for the construction of Jaguara. The interest rate for this was 6%.

The concession for the Jaguara power plant expired on August 28, 2013. CEMIG would like an extension of 20 years to the rules that were in effect until September 2012. They were changed by the government with the intention of getting companies to cut electricity prices. Jaguara, Miranda and São Simão power plants are CEMIG's most profitable hydropower plants. Together they represent 30% of gross income.
