The Camargos power plant ( Portuguese: Usina Hidrelétrica de Camargos ) is a hydropower plant in Brazil that dams the Rio Grande to form the Camargos reservoir (Port. Represa de Camargos ). The Itutinga power plant is located about two kilometers north of the Camargos power plant .

Construction began in 1956. Operations started in 1960.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a dam on the right and a dam in the middle and on the left. The maximum height specified is 36 m. The length of the barrier structure is 608 m. The weir system with the flood relief , consisting of six gates, is located in the middle.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 913 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 50.47 km² and holds 792 million m³ of water - of which 672 million m³ can be used to generate electricity. The minimum congestion destination at which the machines can still be operated is 899 m. The congestion target fluctuates over the course of the year: it normally reaches its maximum in April and remains at this level until mid-August. It then falls and hits the minimum in November or December.

Various water sports are practiced at the reservoir. Different types of fish such as Lambari do rabo vermelho , Dourado or Acará can be found in the lake .

power plant

With an installed capacity of 45 (or 46) MW, the Camargos power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants operated by the electricity producer CEMIG . Two machines with a maximum output of 23 MW each are installed. You are in a machine house on the left side of the dam.

The power plant is owned and operated by CEMIG.

Others

At the end of January 2014, the volume of the reservoir fell to just 23% of the maximum possible volume. By July 2014, the water level of the reservoir continued to fall to 901.2 m, the lowest level in ten years. The volume of the reservoir fell to only 12%. In January 2011 it was exactly the other way round: the reservoir was 93.94% full and the reservoir target even had to be lowered a little in order to be prepared for new rains.
