The Langerlo power plant (Dutch elektriciteitscentrale Langerlo ) is located in Genk on the north bank of the Albert Canal at the level of the Genk lock on the west side of the port in the Genk district of Langerlo. It was built in the 1970s by the then operator Ebes , a predecessor of Electrabel . Initially, two turbines with 235 MW each were installed.
Initially, the power plant was put into operation in 1976 with heating oil , and then, after the local mines were closed , it was operated with imported coal from 1986.
In 1999 the flue gas cleaning was expanded. In addition, two gas turbines of 43 MW each were installed, the waste heat of which preheats the feed water of the main boiler. In addition, the possibility of burning biomass was created.
An exchange of power plant services between Electrabel and E.ON brought the Langerlo power plant into their possession in mid-2009.
At the beginning of January 2016, the power plant was taken over by German Pellets .
The intended conversion to pure biomass operation is to continue despite the insolvency of German Pellets in mid-February: the environmental license for the hard coal power plant expired at the end of March 2016.
Part of the waste heat has been used by fish farming since 1980 .
