The first suggestion for setting up the Kreissparkasse came from Ernst Freiherr von Hammerstein-Loxten , the then district administrator of the Bersenbrück district. In the district committee meeting on May 2, 1885, a motion was introduced in this regard. It was almost two years before the Kreissparkasse officially opened on April 1, 1887.

After only three years of existence of the Kreissparkasse, the savings deposits grew to over one million marks, and in 1912 to over ten million marks. The business area is the original Bersenbrück district, which was the guarantor of the Kreissparkasse until mid-1972.
