NGC 1744 is a faint barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Rabbit south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 27 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter .
The object was discovered by John Herschel in 1835 with an 18.7-inch Newtonian reflector and was later added to the New General Catalog by Dreyer .
