NGC 1740 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Orion the northern sky . It is estimated to be 180 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 1729 , NGC 1741 , NGC 1753 , IC 399 .
The object was discovered on February 11, 1830 by the astronomer John Herschel .
