The cemetery chapel in Obernbreit

The Kreuzkapelle (also Holy Cross Church) in Obernbreit , Lower Franconia, is today's cemetery church of the community. It is on the outskirts of the village on Enheimer Strasse. The chapel belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Dean's Office in Kitzingen .

history

The older research assumed that the church is older than the local church of St. Burkard and was mentioned as a Carolingian branch of St. Martin in Willanzheim as early as the 8th century . However, this assumption is not supported by sources or soil findings. The chapel was first mentioned in the 15th century. At that time it was on the outskirts of the community and was possibly the destination of a pilgrimage. This use ended with the takeover of the Reformation in Obernbreit.

The growing population of the place led in the second half to the fact that the graves around the parish church were no longer sufficient. In 1585 the cemetery was moved to the Kreuzkapelle and the church was rebuilt. This is evidenced by the inscription on the fall stone of the portal, which mentions the village schools with “PAVLVS STRENG” and “PAVLVS HEVNISCH”. Probably in the 18th century the interior was renewed in the margrave style . The church is now listed as a monument.

architecture

The chapel presents itself as a large hall building . It is geosted and has no bell tower. A small death knell was hung in the small dormer-like roof turret. The little church has a sweeping saddle roof, and an apsidal half-timbered choir was added to the building in the 16th century. Inside there is a coffered ceiling, the choir was walled up and now contains the sacristy.

Furnishing

Most of the furnishings in the chapel were added to the church in the 16th century. Three epitaphs, including the two of the married couple George and Apolonia Knorr, the construction time come to 1585. A crucifix of Dreinageltypusses is located on the south wall. It also came into the church in the 16th century. The organ on the wooden gallery dates from 1908 . This fills two sides of the church. On the south side there is a Gothic sacraments niche with bar profiles.
