The Finest Hours is an American period drama directed by Craig Gillespie based on the 2009 novel The Finest Hours - The True Story of the US Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman from 2009 on It was released in US cinemas on January 29, 2016 and in German cinemas on March 31, 2016.

It is February 18, 1952. A huge storm hits New England with full force and leaves the people on the east coast fearful for their lives. The ships at sea are even more helpless, including the oil tanker SS Pendleton , which is torn in two by the storm, killing the captain. There are 32 seamen in the stern of the tanker, which is still buoyant, and Ray Sybert, the highest-ranking officer on board, is in charge, while the others would actually prefer to board a lifeboat, which Sybert recognizes and prevents.

At the same time, the ship's horn signals emitted by the wreck are heard on the mainland. Officer on watch Daniel Cluff, recently appointed station chief of the Coast Guard, gives the order for a daring rescue operation. Although a storm of unprecedented proportions is raging, four men under the command of the helmsman Bernie Webber set sail in a small wooden lifeboat to brave freezing temperatures, 20 meter high waves, a dangerous sandbar and a furious storm and the men on board the Pendleton to rescue. Webber's fiancée tries to prevent the action, but fails due to the commander's lack of insight.

The men on board the stern section made it steerable by means of makeshift aids in order to set the drifting wreck on a shoal and thus delay its sinking. The team succeeds in doing this before the machines and pumps finally fail. Shortly before the wreck sank, the rescue ship's crew made it to the sandbank. The crew of the shipwreck can be fully taken on board except for the cook, who is thrown against the wreck during the descent onto the lifeboat and dies.

The immensely overcrowded rescue ship received a radio command from Cluff to drop the rescued people five miles further northeast on the sea on a lightship. However, Bernie Webber decides against it because both the compass of his rescue ship has failed and he has decided to take the castaways to the mainland. His plan is to let the current of the tide bring him ashore and to orientate himself on illuminated landmarks. Meanwhile, his fiancée and numerous other people are waiting for the boat at the coast guard station. To help them find their way around since the power went out in the whole village, they switch on the headlights of their cars so that the lifeboat can safely reach the harbor.

In August 2011, Walt Disney Pictures acquired the film rights to the bestseller The Finest Hours - The True Story of the US Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue from Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman . Based on the novel, which is based in part on a true story, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson wrote a script for the film and conducted interviews with survivors of shipwrecks. The US Coast Guard's lifeboat CG 36500 , which gained particular fame through its real use in 1952 and on whose story the film is based, is now a museum ship and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places .

Filming

The shooting took place mainly in the fall of 2014 in a soundproof hangar of the Fore River Shipyards , a disused shipyard in the south of Boston . It was necessary that the actors were exposed to mostly wet and cold weather during the filming. The yard area was so large that the production assistants used scooters and bicycles to move between the individual locations. Other locations were also in the US state of Massachusetts , including the villages of Chatham , Cohasset , Norwell , Marshfield and Quincy . The bridge scenes were filmed at the Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury .

The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is devoted to the characterization of its strong and upright protagonists and, despite some action-packed scenes, does not show any overly drastic representations. While children under 12 can be overwhelmed by the threatening scenario and the drama of individual scenes, 12-year-olds are able to put these aspects into context and process them. The film won over 63 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Hans Schifferle from epd Film says: The big gestures and the bombastic music fight desperately against a certain emptiness. The figures appear as shadowy hero projections between yesterday and today.

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter considers the sound and its editing in the film, but also the visual effects in it, to be Oscar-worthy .

While the film only made it to number 4 in the box office charts on the North American cinema market on the opening weekend, it got off to an extremely good start in many other countries, including number 1 in the United Arab Emirates and Ecuador Cinema charts. Leading actor Chris Pine was named Honorary Coast Guard Chief by the local Coast Guard on January 28, 2016 for his convincing portrayal of a member of the rescue team at the premiere of the film in Boston .
