The Kreuzkirche in Wehrendorf , a village in the Valdorf district of the city of Vlotho , is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Wehrendorf, which belongs to the Vlotho parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia .

History and architecture

The Katharinenkirche , which originally existed in Wehrendorf, became the center of a parish around the year 900 , which encompassed a large part of the area of today's city of Vlotho. In the 12th century the center of the community moved into the church Valdorf that later from the monastery Segenstal the monastery Loccum shelter. The Wehrendorfer Katharinenkirche lost its importance and was mentioned as a chapel in 1477 . It is said to have been destroyed in the Thirty Years' War during the Battle of Vlotho and later rebuilt. In 1828 it was finally demolished.

In July 2019, during excavations in Wehrendorf, a foundation made of masonry quarry stone was found which, according to the archaeologists involved from the Bielefeld branch of the LWL, proves the existence of such a structure. Burials were carried out here until the 18th century.

Only in 1969 was a church built again in Wehrendorf, today's Kreuzkirche. The emergency church designed by the architect Otto Bartning , which had previously replaced the Church of the Resurrection in Bad Oeynhausen that had been destroyed by fire , was reused and new design elements were added. A slender, free-standing bell tower with four new bells was erected next to the church . The Bergkirchen-based architect Rudolf Hartog (1924–2018) was commissioned with the implementation and redesign of the emergency church. The organ comes from the Gustav Steinmann Orgelbau company based in Wehrendorf .

In 1970 Wehrendorf was parish off from Valdorf and thus became an independent parish again.
