War memorials in Syke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Syke war memorials are 14 war memorials in the area of the Lower Saxon town of Syke .

General

The total of 14 war memorials are located in Barrien , Gessel , Gödestorf , Heiligenfelde , Henstedt , Jardinghausen , Leerßen , Okel , Osterholz , Ristedt , Schnepke , Syke (center) and in Wachendorf .

They were erected in the years after the First World War on the basis of council resolutions of the respective municipal councils in the then - until 1974 independent - municipalities to commemorate the fallen and missing of the First World War. After the Second World War , the war memorials were supplemented and expanded - with entire memorial parts, with the names of those who fell and missing in the Second World War, or at least with a reference to them.

The memorial for the fallen and missing in the war of 1870/71 , who came from the Syke office , has a special position . It is located in the core area of Syke.

On the 14 war memorials, the names of 1,356 fallen and missing from the war of 1870/71 and both world wars are recorded. The names and in some cases other dates (dates of birth and death, places of birth and death, ranks ) are chiseled, cast in bronze or otherwise fixed for the next few decades. The names of the 15 women who perished in World War II are also recorded on two memorials: 10 in Syke and 5 in Barrien.

The ravages of time have now gnawed at some monuments: some of the inscriptions are weathered , so that the names can hardly or no longer be read and deciphered. This applies to the monuments in Gessel and Barrien.
