Kristine McDivitt Tompkins (born June 30, 1950 in Santa Barbara , California ) is an American environmentalist and former CEO of the clothing company Patagonia . Together with her husband Douglas Tompkins , she founded several national parks in Chile and Argentina , mainly in Patagonia .

Life

Tompkins grew up on a ranch in Santa Barbara, but also lived in Venezuela for a few years during her childhood , where her father worked for an oil company. At the age of 15 she met Yvon Chouinard , who gave her a summer job. After graduating from college at the College of Idaho, she started working full time at Chouinard's company.

Patagonia

From 1973 Chouinard's climbing equipment company became the outdoor clothing brand Patagonia . Tompkins became general manager at the age of 23 and CEO at the age of 28. Patagonia has been active in the One Percent for the Planet merger since 1984 . Each year they donate either 1% of the profit or 10% of the turnover to environmental protection organizations, whichever is greater. In 1993, Tompkins left Patagonia as CEO to fully dedicate himself to protecting the environment.

environmental Protection

Since the 1990s, Tompkins and her husband Douglas have been campaigning for land conservation and nature conservation, primarily in Chile and Argentina . For their first project, they bought a total of around 320 land 000 hectares in the Chilean Región de los Lagos , from which the Pumalin Park was created. Other projects followed in Patagonia , including the Patagonia Park in the Región de Aysen and the Argentine Iberá National Park .

To manage their land, the couple founded the Tompkins Conservation . However, it was their goal not to leave the areas in private hands, but to gradually donate them to the corresponding states so that national parks can be created. For example, Pumalin Park has been a national park since 2018 and is owned by the Chilean state under the supervision of the national park authority CONAF .
