Education in the Context of Critical Theory

According to the claim of critical educational science , education should take place in such a way that mature and critical subjects are formed who can also transform society according to emancipatory aspects. Individual " maturity " is thus directed towards society as a whole. In the 1970s, critical educational science helped the influential philosopher Jürgen Habermas turn to discourse theory : educational goals must be determined in social discourse , as was the case with Klaus Mollenhauer and the later Wolfgang Klafki . Following the example of Claus Offe , upbringing is viewed as a function of economic and political conditions, but it is also granted relative autonomy. With Klafki in particular, didactics are defined as " critical-constructive didactics " on a practical level of action. Another pulse has in the history of education the expression of the intellectual history of social history promoted education. At the reception of symbolic interaction that was qualitative research revived in education. However, the appeal of critical educational science ebbed with the decline in fascination with theories of social change since the 1980s. The “empirical turn” in education was u. a. borne by the criticism of the lack of precision in terms in critical educational science.

Since empirical pedagogy came to the fore, especially through the major educational tests such as TIMSS or the PISA studies , representatives of critical educational science have pointed to the blind spots of this consideration of education and upbringing: z. B. Horst Rumpf .
