Kronprins Frederiks Bro ( German  Kronprinz-Frederik-Brücke ) is a 151-meter-long bascule bridge that crosses the Roskilde Fjord near Frederikssund and connects the Hornsherred and Nordsjælland peninsulas on the Danish island of Zealand . Primærrute 53 leads over the two-lane road bridge , which runs from Hillerød to Kirke Sonnerup and is used there by 20,779 vehicles every day (as of 2009). The structure designed by Denmark's bridge pioneer Anker Engelund (1889–1961) was completed in 1935.

history

A fixed ferry connection between Frederikssund and Hornsherred is first documented for the year 1539 - in the time of the Danish King Friedrich II . The connection was only replaced around 430 later by the predecessor of today's bridge: a 151-meter-long, wooden pontoon bridge , which was opened on June 3, 1868 and named after the then Crown Prince and later King Friedrich VIII . Due to the wear and tear of the structure and increasing traffic, the construction of a new bridge was planned in 1930 by decision of the Frederiksborg Amt council . After a year and a half of construction, the new building was officially opened on October 30, 1935 by Christian X. The then Crown Princess Ingrid and the son of Christian X. and later King Frederik IX also took part in the celebration . part. The name Kronprins Frederiks Bro was retained. While the substructure was carried out by the construction company Bjørn Frederiksen , the companies Vølund and Helsingør Skibsværft were responsible for the steel superstructure .

Because Kronprins Frederiks Bro is a bottleneck for traffic from Hovedstadsområdet to Hornsherred, the construction of a new connection for the route is being discussed. One proposal is for a road tunnel under the Roskilde Fjord, which would be financed by tolls .
