The Krottenseer Forest is located in the east of the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park between the villages of Krottensee in the west, Königstein in the south and Auerbach in the Upper Palatinate in the north. It is largely located in the Auerbach area in the Upper Palatinate on the border between Middle Franconia and the Upper Palatinate .

The Veldenstein Forest joins the forest to the northwest .

Particular attractions in the Krottenseer Forest are the Maximiliansgrotte and the Stone City. The Maximilianwand and the Krottenseer Tower are some of the outstanding climbing destinations in the Franconian Jura . Climbing history was written here with the routes Chasin 'the Trane , Wall Street at the Krottenseer Turm and Action Directe at the Waldkopf . They were the hardest routes in the world in their time.
