Krzysztof Żuk (born June 21, 1957 in Krasnystaw ) is a Polish politician ( KLD , UW , PO ) and since 2010 mayor of Lublin . From 2007 to 2009 he was State Secretary in the Polish Ministry of Finance.

Life and work

Żuk graduated from the 1st Lyceum in Świdnik . He then studied economics at the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin, specializing in political economy. He received his doctorate with a thesis on “Forms of ownership of means of production in the Polish economy and their socio-economic functions”. He became assistant professor at the economics faculty of the university and at the Lublin University of Economics and Innovation. In 1996 he became director of the Lublin branch of the Ministry of Finance.

Żuk joined the Liberalno-Demokratyczny Congress and was chairman of the Świdnik City Council from 1990 to 1996. Through the merger of KLD with Unia Demokratyczna , he came to the merged product Unia Wolności in 1994 . After serving as deputy mayor of Lublin for a short period in 2006/07 , he was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, an office he held until 2009. In March 2010 he joined the Platforma Obywatelska , of which he has been a member since then. In the 2010 local government elections, he ran for the successor to Adam Wasilewski, who was no longer running, as mayor of Lublin and was able to prevail in the runoff election with 54.6% of the votes against the PiS candidate Lech Sprawka. In 2014, despite four opposing candidates, he was re-elected in the first ballot with 60.1% of the vote. 2016, the Central Anti-Corruption Agency, Żuk requested from office to remove because he had belonged to 2016 the Supervisory Board of PZU Zycie life insurance in 2014, which the voivode of Lublin province Przemysław Czarnek (PiS) in February 2017 did. Żuk sued against the impeachment, but the Polish Supreme Administrative Court upheld the voivod's decision in 2019 as legal. Despite this affair, Żuk, who has also been chairman of the PO in the Lublin Voivodeship since 2017, was re-elected in the first ballot in the 2018 municipal elections with 62.3% of the votes in the first ballot against five opposing candidates. This time he ran for a non-partisan electoral committee that was formed not only by the PO but also by the liberal Nowoczesna , the peasant PSL , the left SLD and local initiatives.
