The Ksar Ouled Debbab is a village with about 500 inhabitants in the Tataouine Sud delegation in the Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia . One of the most impressive warehouse castles ( ksour ) in the country is located in the old town center .
location
The small place is located at an altitude of about 400 m in the semi-desert-like terrain of the eastern foothills of the Dahar Mountains about 11 km (driving distance) southwest of Tataouine on the national road RN19. In the village, a narrow piste road branches off to the mountain village of Douiret, about 12 km away .
economy
The place or rather the Ksar was formerly an important station of the caravan trade on the northern edge of the Sahara . Today tourism plays an important role in the economic life of the place.
history
As in the Berber- inhabited regions of the entire Maghreb , there is no written evidence of the history of the place . The traditional, hard and hard life of the inhabitants lasted well into the first half of the 20th century. After that, many families migrated to the cities.
Ksar
The only attraction of the place is the Ksar, built of quarry stones and clay , which consists of a closed courtyard with two-storey superimposed and vaulted storage chambers ( ghorfas ) . The stepping stones in front of the formerly wooden entrance doors of the total of around 400 chambers were accessible via stepping stones set into the walls, movable palm trunks with notched steps, ladders or stone stairs; There are horizontal logs above the doors that were used to pull up sacks etc. with the help of ropes. The chambers themselves served as storage rooms for supplies (grain, oil, dried beans, lentils, dates etc.) and other kinds of belongings (household and work equipment, weapons) for the semi-nomadic ( transhumance ) families of the place. Even trade caravans came to the running mostly in south-north direction trade routes over here and took advantage of the Ksar as easily be guarded and thus secure locking and storage space.
