Ktheju tokës (Albanian, approximate meaning in German: "To return to the land", "To return to the country") is an Albanian-language pop song by Eriona Rushiti. It was interpreted by Jonida Maliqi and is the winning title of the 57th Festivali i Këngës . This is also the Albanian contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv .

background

Albania has been taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest since 2004 and has so far always selected its entries via the Festivali i Këngës , an exception being made in 2015. On October 17, 2018, the list of participants for the 57th edition of the festival was announced. Jonida Maliqi took part in the festival for the tenth time without having won it beforehand.

At the Festivali i Këngës

On the first evening, December 20th, all competition entries were accompanied by the RTSH Symphony Orchestra. Maliqi was the ninth of 22 participants.

The following evening, the contributions were presented in a version that should be as close as possible to the performance at the ESC . The music was recorded from the tape, and Maliqi was accompanied on stage by dancers. She was the first of the 22 participants to appear.

Before the final on December 22nd, the jury selected 14 participants who reached the final round. Jonida Maliqi and her song qualified for the final. There all contributions were presented again accompanied by the orchestra, "Ktheju tokës" was presented as the fifth of 14 appearances. Maliqi was able to collect the most points of the jury and won the competition with 228 points ahead of Lidia Lufi and Eranda Libohova.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Maliqi entered the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with her song. The contribution was listed in 14th place, after Scream from Russia and before Spirit in the Sky from Norway. She was able to qualify for the final with ninth place. There she got the starting number 2 between Chameleon and Friend of a Friend . During the scoring, the Albanian entry received 47 points from the telephone vote and 43 points from the juries. This resulted in 17th place.

Content

The author of the song, Rushiti, describes “Ktheju tokës” as an Albanian song in all its components, from the text, vocal technique, melody to the arrangement. In terms of content, the song is about the difficulties emigrating from his home country brings with it and asks you to return to your home country, comparable to the return of thousands of Kosovars after the Kosovo war . In addition, according to Rushiti, the song is about reflecting on one's own roots. She has chosen to keep the song in Albanian to preserve its originality. The call to Albanians in the world to return to their country could not be made in any other language.

Jonida Maliqi describes that she feels very attached to the song, as her sister has emigrated to Cyprus and there is someone in almost every Albanian family who lives abroad.

publication

The song was published on YouTube on December 10, 2018 in advance of the Festivali i Këngës and the other participants. On March 8, 2019, it was released as a single on iTunes. One month later, on April 19, 2019, the title was published with the other contributions to the 57th Festivali i Këngës on a sampler called "Fest 57".
