The Kubena ( Russian Кубена ) is a river in Arkhangelsk Oblast and Vologda Oblast in northwestern Russia .
It has a length of 368 km and drains an area of 11,000 km². The Kubena forms the main tributary of Lake Kuben and is thus a tributary of the Suchona , which flows over the Northern Dvina to the White Sea .
Important tributaries of the Kubena are the Sjamschena (Сямжена) from the left and the Sit (Сить) from the right.
The city of Kharovsk is located on the left bank of the Kubena. At the mouth of the Kubena in the Kubenasee lies the place Ustje , the administrative center of the Rajon Ustje-Kubenski .
The Kubena catchment area includes large areas in Vologda Oblast and in the south of Arkhangelsk Oblast. It lies between the river systems of the Onega in the west and the Waga in the east.
The source of the Kubena is in the hilly landscape south of the Konoscha settlement . The river flows south from there, reaches Vologda Oblast, then turns briefly to the northeast, and then continues to flow again in a south and south-westerly direction. Below the mouth of the Sjamschena coming from the left, the Kubena turns to the west. Below the city of Kharovsk, the sit meets the Kubena from the right. Eventually the river changes direction again and flows southwest to Lake Kubena, where it forms an estuary delta.
The last 21 kilometers of the river Kubena are considered navigable.
