Youki Kudoh

Youki Kudoh ( Japanese 工藤 夕 貴 , Kudō Yūki ; born January 17, 1971 in Hachiōji ) is a Japanese actress and singer .

life and career

Kudoh began a career as a singer at the age of 12. As an actress, she made her debut in a major role in the 1984 comedy The Reverse Jet Family , for which she won an award at the 1985 Yokohama Film Festival . In 1986 she sang all the songs for the anime Wonderful Pollyanna . For her leading role in the comedy Mystery Train (1989) by Jim Jarmusch , she won the Independent Spirit Award in 1990 . For her leading role in the film Sensō to seishun (1991) she received the Hochi Film Award in 1991 and the Blue Ribbon Award in 1992, and in 1992 she was nominated for the Japanese Academy Award for best leading actress . In 1993 she played the leading role in the musical for the novel Kiki's Little Delivery Service , and in 1994 another in the film drama The Secret of the Bride .

In the Australian thriller Paradise in Flames (1997) Kudoh played one of the leading roles alongside Russell Crowe . Her role alongside Ethan Hawke in the drama Snow that Falls on Cedars (1999) earned her a 2000 Golden Satellite Award nomination . In the action comedy Rush Hour 3 (2007) she played one of the bigger roles alongside Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan .

Time Asia magazine published an article by the actress in 1999 complaining that the Japanese were themselves to blame for the presence of American values ​​in Japanese culture.
