Khulna ( Bengali : খুলনা , Khulnā ) is a city in Bangladesh . It is the capital of the division of the same name and with a good 1.4 million inhabitants (as of 2014) the third largest city in the country (after Dhaka and Chittagong ).
geography
Khulna is located on the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers - both branches of the Ganges in its delta - in the south-west of the country between the capital Dhaka (distance approx. 375 km) and the Indian Kolkata . The city stretches narrowly along the Bhairab and measures almost 21 km in the north-south extension, while it measures 5.5 km at its widest point.
Strangely enough, the population fell by over 100,000 between 2001 and 2011.

Attractions
The city of Khulna is not a distinct tourist city, but can be used as a starting point for boat trips. South of the city is a swamp and jungle area . The Sundarbans -Nationalpark belongs to the World Heritage of UNESCO and is the last refuge of the Bengal tiger and other rare species.
economy
Khulna represents an important center for industry and trade for the country, the port of Mongla is important here . In addition to the jute and cotton processing industry, the chemical leather industry is also located here. There are air, train and sea connections with the capital Dhaka .
religion
Khulna is the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop (→ Diocese of Khulna ).
