Kumara Junction is a small settlement in the Westland District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The name of the place may have originated from the local name of the plant Noxious weed (convolvulus arvensis) and has nothing to do with the sweet potato of the same name. In the language of the Māori Kohimara called, was probably over time Kumara . Another assumption is that the name is borrowed from kohe mara , the flower of Bush Lawyer ( Tataramoa ) , a New Zealand blackberry plant.

The settlement is located around 16 km southwest of Greymouth and around 20 km northeast of Hokitika not far from the confluence of the Taramakau River in the Tasman Sea .

The New Zealand State Highway 6 , which connects the settlement with Greymouth and Hokitika , runs through Kumara Junction . The New Zealand State Highway 73 branches off from State Highway 6 in the settlement

Rail transport

The railway connection between Greymouth and Hokitika , called Hokitika Branch , runs through Kumara Junction . However, only goods are transported on the route.

Attractions

North of Kumara Junction is the Shantytown Heritage Park , an open-air museum where the Infants Creek Tram line can be viewed.
