history

The building was built between 1578 and 1584 as a two-story house. The building owner was the Danish King Friedrich II. The house originally served as a residence for the governors of the Danish king , who also lived in the house when they visited. In the 17th century the property fell to the church through the ruling feudal system and was inhabited between 1638 and 1679 by the superintendent of the diocese of Lund Peder Winstrup , the first bishop after the Reformation .

Since the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, Lund was again under Swedish rule and by a decision of King Charles XI. the house came back into royal possession in 1688. Charles XII resided between September 6, 1716 and June 11, 1718 . in the building and ruled Sweden under the sign of the Great Northern War .

The building was later left to the university, which used it as the main building until the new central building was completed in 1882. Between 1740 and 1742 the building was rebuilt by Carl Hårleman . During a second renovation by Carl Georg Brunius in the years 1837–1839, a third floor and the tower were built. Until 1867 the building was the seat of the astronomical faculty of the university, which then moved to the newly built Old Observatory Lund on the Svanegata . Between 1877 and 1879, changes were made to the facade based on drawings by Helgo Zettervall . Until the move to its new building in 1907, the Kungshuset also served as accommodation for the university library.

Today the building, which has been a listed building as Byggnadsminne since 1935 , is owned by the state and managed by Statens fastighetsverk . The tenant is the philosophy faculty of the university.
