Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi (born March 1, 1968 in Imphal , Manipur ) is an Indian weightlifter.

Career

Kunjarani comes from Manipur in East India , where she grew up and played the Indian national sport of land hockey at school . Since she was very small and petite, she began lifting weights as a sport in 1985 . Because she enjoyed it very much, she made weightlifting her main sport and by 1989 had reached a level of performance that made it possible to participate in international championships. Since 1989 it has therefore started with great success at the World Championships and Asian Championships. So far, she has won 18 medals at world championships. But she has not yet managed to win a World Cup. In the late 1990s and 2000, the Indian women's national team was coached by former Soviet world-class weightlifter Leonid Taranenko . From this point on, Indian athletes are repeatedly convicted of doping. So did Kunjarani in 2001, who received a six-month ban.

N. Kunjarani Devi is Deputy Commander of a unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

She was honored with the Arjuna Award in 1990 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the KK Birla Sports Award in 1996 .
