Lobbies and guard figures

Kuranganilmuttam ( Tamil : குரங்கணில்முட்டம் Kuraṅkaṇilmuṭṭam [ ˈkurʌŋɡaɳilmuʈːʌm ]) is a village in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu with about 700 inhabitants . The place already sung about in Tevaram is one of the holy places of Tamil Shaivism . In the middle of the village there is also a half-sunk rock temple from the Pallava period.

location

Kuranganilmuttam lies at an altitude of almost 85 m above sea level. d. M. approx. 12 km (driving distance) southwest of Kanchipuram . Administratively, the place belongs to the Taluk Cheyyar of the Tiruvannamalai district . The climate is tropical and warm; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months June to December.

population

The inhabitants of the place are predominantly Hindus ; other religious communities hardly play a role among the rural population of southern India. The female proportion of the population is around 9% higher than the male.

economy

In the area around the village there is farming and some cattle breeding (chickens); There are small traders, craftsmen and day laborers in the village.

history

With interruptions mainly caused by the Chola , the dynasties of the Pandyas (capital Madurai ) and Pallavas (capital Kanchipuram ) ruled the region from the early Middle Ages , but they often delegated the actual power to regional vassals. In the 14th century, Muslim rulers briefly occupied power, which then passed to the Hindu Vijayanagar empire, which in turn had to make way for the Nawabs of Karnatik (approx. 1690–1801). In the meantime, however, the British and French fought for supremacy in the region in the Carnatic Wars (1744–1763).

Attractions

  • Kuranganilmuttam was sung in the 8th century in the Tevaram hymns of the poet saint Sambandar . The Valeeswarar temple in Kuranganilmuttam is therefore one of the 274 holy places ( Padal Petra Sthalams ) of Tamil Shaivism .
  • Another attraction of the place is the semi-subterranean rock temple , which can certainly be attributed to the Pallava period (around 620) and the Trimurti ( Brahma , Shiva and Vishnu ). This consists of two transversely mounted lobbies ( ardha- Mandapa and mukha mandapa ) with lateral, respectively two steps to boarding the Annex spaces and three approximately square Cellae ( garbhagrihas ) whose also increased inputs of six life-size guard figures ( dvarapalas ) in more casual manner be guarded. There are several inscriptions, but none of them mention the name of the client.

The rock temples of Mandagapattu , Mahendravadi and Mamallapuram are also assigned to the Pallava period. In Mamallapuram, however, the structural structure and the figural decorations are much more developed and detailed.
