The electoral "water carrier house" in the Bonn district of Poppelsdorf dates back to 1750 and is the only remaining residential building from the baroque electoral era of Bonn in the district. The building is located at the Clemens-August-Straße 13 and stands as monument under monument protection .

history

In 1743, the water carrier of Cologne Elector Clemens August , Peter Blentz (1688–1769), acquired half an acre of land in Poppelsdorf. In 1750 he built a house here - presumably at his own expense. It is also conceivable that the building, along with a few others, was erected at the request of the elector and only subsequently given to deserving servants of the electoral court. Clemens August would not only have had functionaries living near his residence, but at the same time ensured a representative building worthy of a residential town at the entrance to Poppelsdorf.

The first residents of the house in today's Clemens-August-Straße were the family of Peter Blentz and his wife Ursula, nee. Must type. She was his second wife. With her he had five sons and five daughters. Blentz's job as a water carrier was to supply the elector in Bonn and Poppelsdorf with fresh well water every day. He probably took the water used from the "Riesenborn" (in Poppelsdorfer Oberdorf), which was sold in 1829 to the porcelain and earthenware factory Ludwig Wessel . In addition to the house built in 1750, Blentz owned at least two other buildings in Poppelsdorf and a vineyard. He died at the age of 81 and was buried in the Poppelsdorf chapel, which no longer exists. His wife Ursula survived him by 14 years and died in 1783.

In 1845 the Catholic parish bought the property as a place of residence for their clergy. Later, the building housed a grocery store and various restaurants, among other things. In the 1960s it was redesigned to reflect the style of the time.

In February 1979, the imminent demolition of the then neglected house was discussed in the regional press. Bonner General-Anzeiger , Bonner Rundschau and the Ortsbund Poppelsdorf reported on relevant, criticized processes in city authorities. Since all parliamentary groups in the district council agreed to keep the house, the demolition could be prevented. As part of a renovation, the exterior of the house was set back to look like it was from the electoral era. Today it is used privately, the restaurant "Zum Wasserträger", which was set up here in the meantime, no longer exists.

architecture

The two-story house was built in brick, the interior walls partly also made of half-timbered . The basement consists of massive barrel vaults , also made of brick. A slate hipped roof has two dormers . On the street side, the building has two windows on the ground floor, the house entrance and a gate; four window axes on the upper floor. The lattice windows and the entrances are framed in sandstone . On the upper floor there is a decoratively designed outside niche in the middle between the windows, in which a statue of the Madonna is set up. It is not the original, whose whereabouts are unknown.

There is an inscription above and below an oval window above the entrance on the ground floor:

"MOTHER. Of GOD. BLESS THIS HOUSE. BUILT. ANNO 1750. BY. CHURCHORST.
WATER CARRIER PETES BLENTZ. AND URSULA MOSTART GENAND BLENTZ. WHOSE HOUSEWIFE "

In the past the addition is said to have been present: "This house is in the hand of God". At the back of the building that protrudes from today's row of houses on the street is a longer, narrow garden facing Wielstraße.
