Kurt Kühn was a good road cyclist in his youth . So he won in 1914 around Braunschweig , as well as an Olympic elimination race. During the First World War he served as a soldier and was taken prisoner of war . For a while, he ran indoor cycling alongside road cycling. In 1950 Kurt Kühn was elected federal chairman of the BDR. During his term of office, the German association was resumed in the UCI after the Second World War and the 1954 UCI World Championships were held in Germany on the road, rail and indoor.
