Hans-Joachim Hangstein (born July 30, 1924 , † September 21, 1994 in Gießen ) was a German cycling official and from 1971 to 1981 President of the Association of German Cyclists (BDR).

Hans-Joachim Hangstein was a trained businessman; After the Second World War he made up his Abitur , studied law at the University of Münster until 1955 and passed his second state examination in law in 1964. In the same year Hangstein was appointed director of the Halle Münsterland by the city council of Münster , which he then headed for 27 years.

Hangstein came into contact with cycling through the Münster-based Radrennbahn architect Herbert Schürmann , as six-day races were also held in the Münsterland hall . Hangstein became chairman of the Verband Deutscher Radrennbahnen (VDR) and was elected president of the BDR in March 1971 as the successor to Erwin Hauck, who had recently died . As already several times before, the BDR was faced with a precarious financial situation when Hangstein took office, which the new president successfully mastered, in which the number of members increased from around 38,000 to around 63,000. In 1972 he was part of the organizing committee of the Olympic Games in Munich . In 1973 he was appointed chairman of the indoor cycling commission by the Union Cycliste Internationale , and in 1977 he was appointed to the executive committee of the Fédération Internationale Amateur de Cyclisme (FIAC).

During his tenure, several international cycling events took place in Germany, including the UCI World Championships in 1978 on track and road in Munich , the World Indoor Cycling Championships in Offenburg in 1972 and in Halle Münsterland in 1976 and the Cyclocross World Championships in 1977 in Hanover .

1981 passed through Hans-Joachim Hangstein to the previous Vice-President of the BDR, Werner Göhner .
