The Verband Deutscher Radrennveranstalter eV (VDR) represents the interests of the organizers of bicycle races on road and rail in Germany.

Until the First World War

The VDR was founded on March 18, 1900 as the "Association of German Radrennbahnen", the forerunner was the "Association of clubs for cycling". The association saw its task in the care of professional cycling. In the same year, the VDR joined the newly founded Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to represent the interests of German cycling internationally. A test of strength came when it came to alleged wrong decisions at the UCI track world championship in 1910 , and the VDR then left the UCI for two years. The VDR held its own world championships in both 1910 and 1911.

In its early years, the VDR was a powerful institution: With its support, the cycling organizers dictated fees and conditions to the riders, and even penalties and sanctions were imposed unilaterally and without the possibility of objection on the part of the athletes. This practice culminated in 1909 in the so-called “boycott of racing drivers”, which was ended with the formation of an “arbitration committee” and the drafting of new racing regulations after months of disputes. For their part, the athletes founded their own professional association.

Another important task of the VDR was to monitor the pacemakers in standing races , as they tried to use many technical tricks to increase the speeds of the racing drivers. The result was numerous falls, many of them fatal. After the “ racetrack disaster ” on the “Botanischer Garten” cycling track in Berlin in 1909 with nine dead spectators, the regulations were tightened by the VDR.

1918 until today

After the First World War , Paul Schwarz from Berlin took over the chairmanship of the VDR. The situation of professional cycling was difficult until the mid-1920s, as the Association of German Cyclists (BDR) and the VDR were excluded from the UCI and the cycling organizers were fighting for economic survival. In 1927 the VDR became a member of the BDR because the UCI refused to allow it to become a direct member. The VDR lost its weight internationally. In 1933 the VDR was brought into line, and as a result all Jewish organizers were banned from sports.

The VDR was re-established in 1948, the first president was the former Hanoverian racing driver Erich Möller . To mark its 50th anniversary, a 35-kilometer stalker race was held on the cycle race track in Frankfurt in August 1950, which Gustav Kilian won. Since 2009 the VDR has been responsible for the implementation of the German Cycling Cup for everyone races.

Presidents in recent years have been the Sindelfingen sports promoter Winfried Holtmann (* 1941- † 2003), the organizer of the Berlin six-day race , Heinz Seesing , and the former Dortmund racing driver and boss of the Dortmund six-day race , Ernst Claußmeyer . His son Mark has been the new chairman of the association since 2010 , his deputy is the organizer of Around Cologne , Artur Tabat. (As of 2020)

Today's members and duties

Members of the VDR are or were the organizers of the road races around Cologne , Tour d'Energie (Göttingen), around the financial center Eschborn-Frankfurt , Schleizer Dreieck, Neuseen Classics , Mainfranken-Tour , Circuit-Cycling (Hockenheimring), Sparkassen Giro ( Bochum), Rad am Ring (Nürburgring), around the old town of Nuremberg , Rothaus Riderman (Bad Dürrheim) and Sparkassen Münsterland Giro as well as the six-day races in Berlin, Bremen, Stuttgart, Munich and Dortmund.
