Kurt Pommer

Kurt Paul Pommer (born May 5, 1904 in Gera ; † August 13, 1993 in Dresden ) was a German mechanical engineer and rector of the Dresden University of Technology .

Pommer was born in Gera as the son of a railway assistant. After finishing school in 1920, he trained as a locksmith and worked as a locksmith in Schmölln until 1922 . From 1922 to 1925 he attended the State Academy for Technology in Chemnitz , where he graduated as a mechanical engineer. This was followed by a job as a designer at Siemens and Halske in Berlin and from 1929 to 1936 he studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt , which he graduated with a degree in engineering.

Kurt Pommer initially worked as an assistant at the TH Darmstadt and from 1937 worked as a test engineer at the Sachsenwerk Niedersedlitz . Here he later became deputy chief designer and head of overall development in the company management and was plant manager of the Sachsenwerk from 1946 to 1952.

In 1952, Pommer received a call to the Technical University of Dresden due to his "outstanding scientific talent" and "excellent practical performance", where he was initially professor with a teaching position at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and from 1953 to 1969 taught and researched as a professor with a chair in electrical engineering. From 1955 until his retirement in 1969 he was also head of the Institute for Electrical Machines and Drives.

From 1956 to 1958 Pommer was rector of the TH Dresden. During his tenure, among other things, the foundation stone was laid for the Andreas Schubert Building .

Pommer held various state functions, for example he was a member of the Research Council of the GDR and chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board for Technology in the State Secretariat for higher education and technical schools. The then University of Electrical Engineering in Ilmenau awarded Pommer an honorary doctorate in 1959 . In 1960, as part of the “Einheitsmotoren” collective, he was awarded the GDR Second Class National Prize. In 1964 he was awarded the “ Labor Banner ” and in 1966 he was elected a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . As part of the electrical engineering collective at the TU Dresden, Pommer received the Humboldt Medal in gold in 1975 ; from 1979 he was honorary senator of the TU Dresden. He died in Dresden in 1993 and was buried in the Leubnitz-Neuostra cemetery.

Pommer was considered a specialist in the field of electrical engineering. One of his works is the electrical engineering paperback , in which he was a co-author.
