Kurt Sydow

Kurt Sydow (born June 6, 1908 in Stettin ; † June 7, 1981 in Osnabrück ) was a German music teacher , composer , musicologist , lecturer and university rector.

Career

His parents were the engineer Heinrich Sydow and Marie Sydow, née Schanzenberg. In his hometown of Stettin , he attended the Bismarck secondary school from 1914 to 1924. He then studied from 1925 to 1927 at the orchestral school in Berlin, then from 1927 to 1929 at the University of Music in Berlin with the Austrian violinist Josef Wolfsthal (1899–1931).

From 1929 to 1932 he worked as a music educator at the strongly musically oriented reform pedagogical school by the sea on the North Sea island of Juist , where he worked with Martin Luserke and Eduard Zuckmayer . From 1932 to 1939 he was active at the Musikheim Frankfurt (Oder) under Georg Götsch . Jens Rohwer was one of his students on Juist and in Frankfurt (Oder) . In 1939 he became a music teacher at the Conradinum in Danzig-Langfuhr, but then took part in the Second World War as a soldier.

In the post-war period he was concertmaster at the Stadttheater Weimar from 1945 to 1947 . In 1948 he was a lecturer in music and music education at the Bederkesa University of Education, which was temporarily set up , then from 1948 to 1955 he was a lecturer in music education and performing games at the Göttingen University of Education . He was also active as an orchestra, choir and singing leader.

In 1955 he became a professor at the Adolf Reichwein University in Osnabrück, where he was rector from 1962 to 1965. His retirement took place in 1973. Walter Heise succeeded his chair at the newly founded University of Osnabrück .

Kurt Sydow married Anni Hahn in 1936. The marriage resulted in a son and three daughters.

  • In the Freideutschen Kreis, a loose umbrella organization formed after the Second World War for activists of the youth movement , Kurt Sydow became known through his work in shaping the convent in Osnabrück in 1980; he designed an exhibition about Martin Luserke .
