After graduating from high school in Minden in 1912 , Bohnenkamp studied mathematics, physics, philosophy and education from 1912 to 1914 at the Philipps University of Marburg . He had already joined the Alt-Wandervogel and the Wandervogel in Minden in 1909 , headed an academic association with young people in Marburg during his studies and took part in the Freideutschen Jugendtag in October 1913 on the Hohe Meissner . His studies were interrupted by the First World War , in which he participated as an artillery officer . In 1915 he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and in 1918 the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern .
Bohnenkamp continued his studies in Göttingen from 1919 to 1920 . From 1918 to 1930 he worked as a teacher at high schools in Minden , Rotterdam , Unna and Bremen . Then he became a professor of education and philosophy at the Pedagogical Academy in Frankfurt (Oder) and in 1932 in Elbing and from 1934 to 1939 at the Cottbus College for Teacher Training .
In 1933 Bohnenkamp joined the SA , in which he assumed the rank of Obersturmführer in 1943 . In 1937 he also became a member of the NSDAP . Bohnenkamp took part in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945 . He was called up in August 1939 and initially took over command of an artillery officers' school. Since April 1, 1942, he was a Major of the reserve battalion commander , then lieutenant colonel and chief of an artillery regiment before Stalingrad and Orel arc. On January 22, 1943 he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross as Major and Commander of the III. Battalion of the 295 Artillery Regiment for the division's fighting in the Stalingrad area. He was largely responsible for naming this university as the Adolf Reichwein University of Applied Sciences in Celle , which he headed until she moved from Celle to Osnabrück and where he worked as a professor until his retirement in 1958. He had been a close friend of Reichwein since 1920 and also managed the Reichwein archive until 1972. From 1952 to 1958 he was chairman and until 1962 member of the board of the working group for educational universities .
Hans Bohnenkamp and Lieselotte Fischer married on July 13, 1923. The couple had three children.
Relationship with Helmut Schmidt
The future German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt reported repeatedly that Hans Bohnenkamp had made a lasting impression on him in a prison camp near Ostend in Belgium.
“There was a wonderful man there - Hans Bohnenkamp, a university professor who was 15 years older than him, decorated up to his neck with oak leaves and shit like that. He was a religious socialist, also one of those who thought they should do their duty as a soldier. He not only taught me what democracy is, he also made me a soci. "
“So we had courses and seminars, and Bohnenkamp gave a lecture entitled 'Seduced People' in which he attempted a general settlement with the Nazis. As a result, the majority of the younger officers thought we were polluters. Since the English had spies in the camp, they noticed and we were released and the others had to work in French mines for another two years. "
In addition, a conversation with Bohnenkamp is said to have been the reason for Helmut Schmidt to join the SPD . Bohnenkamp himself joined the SPD in 1945/46. He received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on June 18, 1958, the Great Cross of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit in 1963 and the Justus Möser Medal of the city of Osnabrück on December 22, 1967 .
