Kurt Wegner (politician)

Kurt Wegner (born July 2, 1898 in Berlin ; † February 21, 1964 there ) was a German politician (SPD).

Live and act

After attending primary school, Wegner learned the model carpentry trade . From 1916 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. After leaving the army in 1919, Wegner became a publisher and bookseller .

Wegner was politically active in the SPD . In 1924 he was appointed SPD party secretary in Sommerfelde . He later settled in Cottbus , where he was a member of the city council and from 1927 to 1933 held the post of editor-in-chief of the Märkische Volksstimme . From 1931 to 1932 Wegner sat in the Prussian state parliament .

From July to November 1932 Wegner was a member of the Reichstag .

After the National Socialist " seizure of power " Wegner had to give up his work as a politician and editor. With his wife and son he retired to Eichwalde until 1945 .

After the war, Wegner rejoined the SPD. He became chairman of the local SPD association of Eichwalde and mayor of the community. In 1949 Wegner fled to West Berlin to avoid the imminent arrest by the authorities of the Soviet zone of occupation . In 1954 he was elected district councilor for personnel and administration and deputy district mayor in Berlin-Charlottenburg . In 1958, he was promoted to district mayor. He held this office until his death.

Kurt Wegner died in February 1964 at the age of 65 after a biliary operation in Berlin. His grave is in the Heerstraße cemetery in Berlin-Westend (grave location: 12-D-19/20). Kurt Wegner's final resting place was dedicated to the State of Berlin as an honorary grave from 1965 to 2017 .
