Athletic career

At the age of 22, Kurt Weichler came from the third-class sports club in Neinstedt to the second division club SG Eisenhüttenwerk Thale in 1949 . With the SG EHW, Weichler became national soccer champion of Saxony-Anhalt . In the national championship promotion round, the team qualified for the 1950/51 season of the GDR league. Weichler played his first league game on December 17, 1950 in the 17th match of the SG EHW at home against progress Meerane (5: 2). He scored his first league goal five game days later in a 4-0 home game against Lok Stendal . By the end of the season, Weichler was used a total of 15 times in the league, scoring three goals. During the season, the SG EHW was restructured into the company sports community (BSG) Stahl Thale. In the following two seasons, Weichler was a member of the steel team. Of the 68 league games he missed only nine games and with his 15 goals, which he usually scored as a left winger, was one of the most reliable goal scorers of his team. With fifth place, BSG Stahl achieved the best result in its history in the top division in 1952/53. The relegation came as a surprise the following season. Weichler also did not have a good playing time, because he could only be used eleven times in the 28 point games and only scored one championship goal. After relegation Stahl Thale played in the GDR league in 1954/55 . There Weichler played 20 of the 26 point games and found back to his old accuracy with his seven league goals. Seventh place in the league season 2 was not enough for Thale to stay in the league, as the GDR league was reduced from three seasons to one. The BSG Stahl Thale sank for years in the lower class football area, Kurt Weichler no longer returned to the higher football leagues.
