In short - In a Nutshell (formerly only in short ) is a video series on scientific and socio-political topics that is mainly distributed via its own YouTube channel. With over 12 million subscribers (as of May 2020), it is one of the most popular German YouTube channels . The videos are produced by the design studio Kurzgesagt, founded by Philipp Dettmer and based in Munich .
Content
In short, the educational videos that appear on a regular basis mainly deal with scientific topics in the areas of (astro) physics and biology as well as philosophy , history and politics . For example, the four most-clicked videos deal with the Fermi paradox , the immune system , addiction and the refugee crisis (the last two have since been deleted for quality reasons). The German speaker for the series is Christoph Jablonka , the English videos are spoken by Steve Taylor. The background music is produced by Epic Mountain.
history
The channel was created in July 2013 under the name Kurzgesagt on YouTube . The first video appeared on the channel that same month. Until January 2014, animated educational videos on various topics were published on the channel in English and German. Since the founding of the second channel KurzgesagtDE, or since 2017 everything explained - Kurzgesagt, videos only appear in English on the main channel, while German videos are uploaded on the second channel. At the same time the main channel was renamed and the English translation of the channel name, In a Nutshell , was added. On August 7, 2019, the Spanish-language channel En Pocas Palabras - Kurzgesagt in German: "In a nutshell - Kurzgesagt" was founded.
The channel “Things explained - in short” has been part of the funk network of ARD and ZDF since September 28, 2017 . A first video appeared on the channel on December 27th, and further videos appear every two weeks. The addition of “things explained” is a backronym to “DE” in the previous name.
At the beginning of November 2019, the English-language channel became the first German channel to surpass the 10 million subscriber mark on YouTube, which was also mentioned in YouTube Rewind 2019.
