Shorthand orchestral line-up

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The shorthand in the line-up of a classical symphony orchestra makes it possible, in particular, to make the required wind instrumentation of a work clear. The shorthand is based on the arrangement of the instruments in the classical orchestral score , read from top to bottom.

The orchestra is divided into four groups and given in the following order:

There is no uniform system for noting deviations from the standard cast. The following examples show common solutions.

If soloists or a choir belong to the piece, then these are usually above the strings in the score. However, the instrumental soloists are not included in the shorthand. In the case of orchestral works with a choir and vocal soloists, these are occasionally recorded in shorthand, whereby the vocal parts are given with letters corresponding to their part and not with numbers like the orchestral parts.
