Kutki millet or small millet ( Panicum sumatrense , syn .: Panicum miliare auct. Non Lam. ) Is a type of cereal and useful plant from the sweet grass family (Poaceae).
description
This type of cereal resembles the millet in habit , but is smaller. It is an annual herbaceous plant that grows upright or with bent stalks and reaches heights of 0.3 to 1 m. The leaves are linear, the blades sometimes hairy, with membranous ligules . The panicles are 4 to 15 cm long with 2 to 3.5 mm long awns. The caryopsis is round and smooth, brown, 1.8 to 1.9 mm long.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.
Systematics
According to R. Govaerts, Panicum sumatrense is Roth ex Roem. & Schult. a synonym of Panicum flexuosum Retz.
Two subspecies have been described:
- Panicum sumatrense Roth ex Roem. & Schult. subsp. psilopodium (Trin.) De Wet
- Panicum sumatrense Roth ex Roem. & Schult. subsp. sumatrense
Occurrence
In the temperate zones of Asia: Caucasus , China , East Asia as well as in the tropics of the continent: India , Indochina and Malaysia . The cultivation in India can reach up to 2000 m.
This type of grain is grown on the poorest soils in India and Sri Lanka and can withstand drought as well as waterlogging.
Cultivation and use
Larger growing areas are in central India. Usually the plant is grown in drill seeds. They can also be warped if necessary. Some of the green plants are also fed to livestock. The straw is used in combination with clay or cement for building purposes.
Grain yield: about 2.3 to 9 dt / ha.
Preparations
The millet grains are cooked like rice. Sometimes the millet is also ground and baked. The protein content in the grain is 7.7%.
