life and work

Steckeweh took piano lessons for the first time at the age of six. She achieved competitive successes at Jugend musiziert and at the Steinway Piano Competition and took master classes with Paul Badura-Skoda and Jura Margulis .

Steckeweh studied piano and instrumental pedagogy with Tomoko Ogasawara at the Freiburg University of Music and at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with George Kern. In 2011 she completed her studies in Freiburg with a diploma examination. At the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, she also completed the school music and history courses with the first state examination in 2009/2010 . As part of a qualification position at the University of Music Freiburg 2018/2019, Steckeweh dealt with music editing practice for the historical-critical publication of works by female composers.

In addition to the standard repertoire for her instrument, Steckeweh especially plays the music of little-known female composers . With her concert activity, Steckeweh aims to make women's music perceptible as part of cultural heritage . In this context, she realized the documentary women composers together with filmmaker Tim van Beveren in 2018 . The film tells the story of four musicians who fought for their place in musical life in the 19th century: Fanny Hensel , Emilie Mayer , Lili Boulanger and Mel Bonis . The documentary won the New York Movie Awards.

In order to record the music of not famous female composers , Steckeweh often works with autographs because there are not always reliable music editions. In spring 2020, Steckeweh recorded the first recording of the Sonata in C minor by the composer Sophie Westenholz for Deutschlandfunk . There were no previous recordings of the composer from the time of the Viennese Classicism .

Steckeweh lives as a freelance pianist in Leipzig .
