from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tim van Beveren (* 1961 in Düsseldorf ) is a German journalist , non-fiction author , film director and film producer . a. in the aviation sector .

Life

After graduating from high school, Tim van Beveren completed an apprenticeship in photography and then studied law in Bonn , and later fine arts in Urbino , Italy. He lives in Berlin .

During his student days he made his first full- length feature film (Jannan - Die Abschichtung) , which was shown in German art house cinemas in 1986. In addition to his studies, he began to work for film and television production companies, completed a journalistic traineeship at a news agency in what was then the federal capital of Bonn and worked for local city television.

He later worked for airlines and international law firms as well as institutions as a consultant on aviation safety issues. He was an expert for the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt a. M. in connection with the crash of a Boeing 757 of the Turkish airline Birgenair off the coast of the Dominican Republic in 1996.

He has worked as an author for various print media in Germany and abroad, including Spiegel , Focus , Facts , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Die Zeit , Stern , Die Welt , Aviation Today , Air Safety Week and Flight International .

For several years he was a war correspondent in the former Yugoslavia and Iraq and was a correspondent for private media companies in the USA. He mainly worked as a freelancer for public television in Germany.

In 1994, after the crash of a Norwegian charter plane on the flight from Oslo to Hamburg, he was concerned with the dangers of counterfeit aircraft spare parts ("bogus parts"). His television report "Zündstoff: The risk flies with" was broadcast in March 1994 on ZDF.

In a documentary entitled "Deadly Logic" broadcast for the first time in 1995 on West German Broadcasting (WDR) , he dealt critically with the human-machine interface in the computer-aided cockpit of the Airbus A320 introduced in the early 1990s, particularly after the landing accident of the Lufthansa Airbus A320 "Kulmbach" on September 14, 1993 in Warsaw. The further broadcast of this film was initially prohibited at the request of the aircraft manufacturer Airbus before the Hamburg district court. The WDR recognized the order, van Beveren not and thus opened the main proceedings in the matter against Airbus. He proved to Airbus that two high-ranking employees had given false affidavits in the previous preliminary injunction proceedings. The main proceedings were only closed seven years later, on May 5, 2003 by Airbus by withdrawing the lawsuit.

In 2001 van Beveren and a film team accompanied the undercover investigations of the Italian public prosecutor's office and the US Department of Transportation, which were conducted under the code name "Operation Latin Phoenix". The subject of the investigation was counterfeit aircraft spare parts that had been delivered to airlines worldwide, including Lufthansa, by a dealer in Rome and partner companies in the USA. The documentary was broadcast under the title "The Story: Dangerous Flights" on February 3, 2002 on WDR. As a result, airlines were requested by the responsible supervisory authorities to remove the questionable parts from their fleets. Lufthansa alone had to check 150 engines in this context.

Since 2008 van Beveren has been researching the subject of " contaminated cabin air in commercial aircraft ". As an author and journalist, he has since written numerous articles for ARD and print media. On September 21, 2011, he was one of the six experts at a private hearing in the German Bundestag.

From 2013 to 2015 he made a film documentary on the subject of “contaminated cabin air”. The English-language original version of the film Unfiltered breathed in - The Truth about Aerotoxic Syndrome ( Eng . Title: " Unfiltered inhaled - The truth about the aerotoxic syndrome ") premiered on July 15, 2015 in the Berlin art house Babylon in Berlin-Mitte. A documentary entitled Nervengift im Flugzeug , previously produced on behalf of WDR for the ARD series “Die Story” in 2014, caused a scandal regarding the authorship and content of the television program. The version of the film, which was finally broadcast on ARD on July 7, 2014 without van Beveren's approval, was also the subject of a program complaint.

Since 2015 van Beveren has been supporting Master’s students at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin with the “Necropolis Project”, which deals with the visualization of war death and the victims of tyranny.

Van Beveren received particular attention at a press conference in March 2017, in which he questioned Andreas Lubitz's responsibility for the accident on Germanwings flight 9525 in an expert report of several hundred pages . On the initiative of Lubitz's father, van Beveren presented the results of his own investigations in an expert report that calls into question several conclusions from the official investigations. In his opinion, it has not been proven beyond any doubt that Lubitz deliberately crashed the machine. He criticizes the fact that the investigators were caught by a so-called confirmation bias (a confirmation error) at an early stage and that the voice recorder of the crashed machine, contrary to the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), was only evaluated by engineers, but not by human factor specialists has been. The responsible Düsseldorf public prosecutor's office rejected these statements. The completed proceedings have shown "a clear responsibility on the part of Andreas Lubitz as the culprit". The French investigative authorities also confirmed that the copilot had deliberately crashed the aircraft. The Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Transport stated that there were no doubts about the results of the investigation.

In 2018 van Beveren shot the documentary women composers together with pianist Kyra Steckeweh . The film tells the story of four musicians who fought for their place in musical life in the 19th century: Fanny Hensel , Emilie Mayer , Lili Boulanger and Mel Bonis . The documentary won the New York Movie Awards.
