The Wittstock-Ruppiner Heide (also Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide ) is a forest , grassland and heathland landscape in the northwest of the state of Brandenburg . It forms a natural area of the North Brandenburg plateau and hill country . The eastern part of the Wittstock-Ruppiner Heide is known as Ruppiner Switzerland .

The area of over 700 square kilometers extends in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district between Wittstock / Dosse in the northwest and Neuruppin and Herzberg (Mark) in the southeast. It borders in the north on the Mecklenburgische Großseenland and the Neustrelitz Kleinseenland (including the Rheinsberger Seengebiet ), in the east on the Granseer Platte , in the south on the Rhinluch and Ruppiner Platte and in the west on the Dossiederung . The Wittstock-Ruppiner Heide, together with the Granseer Platte, Rüthnicker Heide and Ruppiner Platte, form the main natural unit of the Ruppiner Heiden and Platten .

The landscape is characterized by a large forest, grassland and heathland area, which is mainly made up of sand and is therefore dry and barren. Pine forests determine the landscape, but arable land has also been created in the vicinity of some localities. The predominant type of use of the landscape is also the large pine forests. In Ruppin Switzerland there are valley sands with chains of lakes and mixed forests.

Between 1952 and 2011, the Wittstock military training area of the group of Soviet armed forces in Germany and the Bundeswehr was located in the Wittstock-Ruppiner Heide . The area has an area of 118.99 km². Due to the military use, among other things as an air-to-ground firing range , little is left of the original forest and heathland landscape in this area. There is extensive grassland and heather vegetation here.

From a nature conservation point of view, the large grasslands and heather areas of the former military training area are particularly valuable; they have FFH status . In addition, a large deciduous and mixed forest area of Buchheide , the wetland Berlinchener Luch and Ruppiner Switzerland around the river Rhin are designated as FFH areas. The large wetland Schönberg-Blankenberg is designated as a nature reserve in the southwest of the Wittstock-Ruppiner Heide.
