Kyro Ponte

Kyro Ponte (born May 18, 1972 in Esslingen am Neckar , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German-Greek writer and neuroscientist .

Life

Kyro Ponte (actually Kyriakos Sidiropoulos) was born in 1972 in Esslingen am Neckar. He returned to Greece with his parents in 1980, where he grew up in Thessaloniki's Ilioupoli district and attended local schools. Already in his school days Ponte wrote his first short stories and poems and in 1987 he received an award for his poems from the Greek Writers' Union of Thessaloniki.

After graduating from high school in Thessaloniki, Kyro Ponte moved to Freiburg im Breisgau and began studying biology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg in 1991 , later studying linguistics and philosophy .

His one-year stay at the Goethe-Institut Rothenburg ob der Tauber was a key experience for him. During this time he traveled to several European cities and stayed with a befriended Japanese family in Osaka . In Japan he visited the most important places of worship in the country in the cities of Kyoto (including Rokuon-ji , Kiyomizu-dera , Heian-jingū ), Nara (including Tōdai-ji , Kōfuku-ji ), Yokohama and Tokyo . After this trip, he became more interested in Japanese culture, particularly the country's literature, history and religion. He translated several short stories by Oe Kenzaburo and Jun'ichirō Tanizaki into Greek.

After completing his studies, Kyro Ponte began a neuroscientific doctoral degree at the Graduate School of Neural and Behavioral Sciences (Max Planck Research School) in Tübingen, which he graduated with “magna cum laude”. In Tübingen, Ponte co-founded the literature portal Inlitera, from which the anthology “Networks” emerged in 2007, as well as a series of interviews with authors (including Petros Markaris , Herbert Rosendorfer , Yōko Tawada and Vassilis Vassilikos ). In addition to the neuroscientific publications, he wrote a number of literary texts. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Society of Greek Authors in Germany. Ponte is married and lives and works in Stuttgart.
