L'Homme. European Journal for Feminist History (also L'Homme ZFG , L'Homme for short ) is a scientific journal with a focus on women's and gender history and is published in Austria and Germany . It is considered the first German-language journal for feminist history .

history

The magazine was published in 1990 under the title L'Homme. Journal for feminist history founded, the preliminary considerations going back to 1987. The initiator and co-founder was the Viennese historian Edith Saurer , who died in 2011 and was one of the editors until her death. She saw the need for a magazine for the still young women's and gender history. Together with seven other scientists from the fields of history, philosophy and political science (Erna Appelt, Birgit Bolognese-Leuchtenmüller, Heide Dienst , Christa Hämmerle , Waltraud Heindl, Brigitte Mazohl-Wallnig , Herta Nagl ) she developed the concept from 1989.

The title of the magazine ( L'Homme ), with which man / person was linked to feminism, was intended as an ironic reference to the necessary correction of the theory and practice of historical studies. The logo chosen for the magazine should make this clear. It shows Leonardo da Vinci's sketch of the Vitruvian man , but without the man / human.

L'Homme was part of a wave of "magazine creation" in the early 1990s, including other feminist history magazines such as Gender and History (1989), Metis. Journal of Historical Women's Studies and Feminist Practice (1992), Women's History (1992), The European Journal of Women's Studies (1994), and Clio. Histoire, Femme et Sociétés (1995).

In 1995 the group of editors from Austria was expanded to include editors from Germany and Switzerland (including Ute Gerhard , Karin Hausen , Claudia Ulbrich).

The book series L'Homme Schriften has also been published since 1995 . From 2003 to 2015 the source edition series L'Homme Archiv was also published . B. Diaries and memoirs were published.

Several years later, a peer review process was introduced alongside the review by the editors .

After an intensive debate, the subtitle of the journal was changed to “European Journal for Feminist History” in 2005, which - as explained in the editorial - expresses “the European / transnational location of the editors”, “but not a geographical limitation of the research field, whose openness is important to everyone ”.

The magazine is financed by public subsidies, especially in Austria. L'Homme was part of the 2006 to 2011 research platform “Re-positioning the history of women and genders in a changed European context” at the University of Vienna. When the funding of the research platform ran out, its members saw the holdings of the magazine L'Homme and the archive “Collection of Women's Legacies”, which Edith Saurer set up in 1990, at acute risk, and in spring 2012 they initiated a project to the University of Vienna and the Federal Ministry of Science and Research (unofficial) online petition directed in Austria to receive it. This has succeeded (for the time being); in 2014 L'Homme celebrated its 25th anniversary.
