In 1908 he won the bronze medal behind Norway and Sweden with the free rifle in London together with Eugène Balme , André Parmentier , Albert Courquin , Maurice Lecoq and Raoul de Boigne . Four years later he stayed in Stockholm without winning a medal, but narrowly missed the podium twice. Both in the three-position battle with the free rifle and with the small-bore rifle in the prone position, he took fourth place in the team competition. At the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 he competed in ten disciplines and won two silver medals. In the prone position with the army rifle he achieved second place in the individual behind Otto Olsen and in front of Fritz Kuchen as well as in the team competition alongside Achille Paroche , André Parmentier, Georges Roes and Émile Rumeau . In six other disciplines he was among the top six in the ranking.
At world championships , Johnson won six silver and six bronze medals, including three with the pistol . He secured ten of his twelve medals with the team, the other two he won in 1921 in Lyon with the army rifle in a three-position battle and in a prone position.
Johnson was Mayor of Montesson from 1919 to 1928 , where later a street was named after him, Avenue Léon Johnson .
