Léopold Hoffmann (born February 1, 1915 in Clervaux / Luxembourg ; † October 6, 2008 ) was a German-speaking Luxembourgish writer .

Life

Léopold Hoffmann was the son of a teacher. From 1928 to 1935 he attended the Kolléisch in Diekirch and from 1935 to 1936 the “Cours Supérieurs” in Luxembourg City . He then studied German , classical philology , history and psychology at the universities in Paris , Leuven and Bonn . In 1940 he received his doctorate in philosophy in Luxembourg . He then became a teacher at the Athénée de Luxembourg , but was forcibly transferred to Düsseldorf by the German occupation authorities in 1941 and to Düren in 1942 . From 1943 he taught again in his Luxembourg homeland, a. a. in Diekirch and Esch . He continued this activity even after the end of the Second World War . In 1948 he studied Dutch philology for two semesters in Amsterdam . From 1949 until his retirement in 1979 he worked as a high school professor at the Athénée de Luxembourg.

In addition to his educational work, Léopold Hoffmann also wrote literary studies. He also wrote numerous columnist articles, book and theater reviews for newspapers and magazines, and later also short stories, radio plays and aphorisms .

Leopold Hoffmann was a member of the PEN Center Germany , the Luxembourg “ Institut Grand-Ducal ” and at times of the authors' association “ Die Kogge ”. In 1993 he received the Luxembourg literary prize " Prix ​​Batty Weber ".
