Coitus a tergo (Latin for “sexual intercourse from behind”) or vis a tergo (Latin for “force from behind”), often shortened to a tergo (Latin for “from backwards” to tergum back), is a summary term for Several positions ( sexual practice ) and variants of having sexual intercourse in which one partner has the other's back in view.

Scientifically, this sexual practice is known as dorso-ventral copulation . Direct eye contact is hardly possible in these positions. For most vertebrate and especially mammalian species, dorso-ventral copulation is the common form of copulation.

It was already described and evaluated in antiquity. The Roman poet and Epicurean philosopher Lucretius wrote in his De rerum natura (German About the nature of things or Of the essence of the universe ) that the a tergo position was the more dispassionate and would therefore be preferred; women in this position would also get pregnant more easily.

Therefore, the name of the position is because it is similar to that involved in the mating can be observed from dogs (and other animals). In doggy style (also known as doggy style ), one partner kneels and the other partner inserts his penis , dildo or similar from behind . Both the vagina and the anus can be penetrated. When used while standing, the partner in front must more or less form a hollow back, depending on the angle of inclination and straightening of the upper body. With sexual partners of very different sizes, this position can be problematic without aids such as high shoes or steps.

On the other hand, the difference in size and the possibility of slightly varying the height of the pelvic position and thus the angle of penetration by spreading the legs, also when kneeling, open up additional possibilities for stimulation. It is stated as an advantage of this position that the penetrating partner has both hands free in order to additionally stimulate other erogenous zones of the kneeling partner, such as the breasts, the clitoris or the penis. In addition, the (scientifically controversial) erogenous zones of women inside the vagina ( G-spot , A-spot ) should be particularly strongly stimulated during vaginal intercourse in this position. For the A point, this would also be influenced by a possible variation in the position of the uterus . The only very limited possibility of eye contact and kissing is seen as a disadvantage. In addition, there should be a higher risk of penile ruptures in this position compared to other positions .

Spoon position

Spoon position

When Spoons or Spooning the partners lie on their sides, and a partner or a partner enters from behind into the anus or vagina of the other partner or the other partner a. The name of the position comes from the similarity with two spoons one inside the other .

One advantage of the position is the high level of intimacy due to the possible large body contact, since the partners can largely snuggle up. Both partners can also stimulate each other in the erogenous zones , as the arms are not used for support. The spoon position is also preferred by many women during pregnancy .

Double penetration

For a double penetration ( sandwich ), one of the two penetrating partners is usually in the a-tergo position. This results in vaginal and anal penetration of the woman at the same time .
