The Löwenbrücke is a railway bridge in the southeast of the Saxon city of Radeberg . The building, completed in 1846, is a listed building.

history

In a state treaty between Prussia and Saxony in 1843, the establishment of a cross-border railway connection was decided. The Saxon-Silesian Railway Company founded for this purpose began in May 1844 with the construction of the railway line from Dresden to Görlitz . In November 1845, the section from Dresden to Radeberg was opened, the entire line was opened in September 1847. In the Radeberg urban area, the created railway connection required the construction of several bridges , which were completed in 1845 and 1846.

location

The Lion Bridge is located at kilometer 83.9 of the Görlitz – Dresden railway line , which runs over the bridge on two tracks . A dirt road, which branches off from Kleinwolmsdorfer Straße, and a small tributary of the Schwarzen Röder , which runs right next to the bridge , lead under the bridge . The forest mill used to be located on the river near the Lion Bridge , and its access led through the structure. The mill functioned as a fulling mill for processing textiles .

Lion head

The stone arch bridge with two arches is 32 meters long and 13.5 meters high. The overlying tracks are at a height of 247 meters above sea level. NN . The bridge is provided with iron railings on both sides. The transition from the vertical edges of the abutments and the central pillar to the arches is accentuated by strong cornices . In the gusset between the two arches, there is a stone relief of a lion's head on both long sides of the bridge, which gave the building its name.

Others

When planning the construction of the Großerkmannsdorf / Radeberg bypass on State Road 177 , the city of Radeberg intended to run the new road under the Lion Bridge. The decision to build the new S 177 as a three-lane motorized road prevented the realization of this project, as the space under the bridge was not sufficient for three lanes. Instead, a new road bridge was built over the railway line about 200 meters east of the Lion Bridge.
