Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2012 was the 98th edition of Liège – Bastogne – Liège , a one-day cycle race . It was held on April 22, 2012 over a distance of 257.5 km and was the thirteenth race of the UCI WorldTour 2012 . The race was won by Maxim Iglinski in front of Vincenzo Nibali and Enrico Gasparotto .
The decisive top group formed on the Côte de la Roche aux Faucons. Pierre Rolland attacked and Vincenzo Nibali followed first. The field breaks apart at the steepest section. Vincenzo Nibali, Jelle Vanendert , Philippe Gilbert and Pierre Rolland reach the top of the climb first and Vincenzo Nibali rushes down the streets (one of his strengths) and manages to tear a gap. The rest cannot agree on whether and who should follow, apparently their strengths are at an end.
Astana is the only team with three people in the main group, but all three have little chance of winning if it comes to a sprint finish against Philippe Gilbert, among others . Joaquim Rodríguez , the winner from Fléche Wallonne , and Maxim Iglinski do the only thing that makes sense and attack alone to overtake Vincenzo Nibali with a 40-second lead and hope for a second or third place.
Vincenzo Nibali clearly suffers on the last 8 kilometers and on the last climb . In the meantime, Maxim Iglinski hangs out from Joaquim Rodríguez and, as he thinks, drives himself to second place. The official gap to Vincenzo Nibali is 45 seconds, the winner seems to be certain. However, this was a fallacy, the official time is wrong. Vincenzo Nibali lost more seconds than first thought. The gap to Maxim Iglinski is only 10 seconds, he can almost see the green jersey of the Italian in front of him.
Shortly before the 1-kilometer mark, the Kazakh overtook Vincenzo Nibali and crossed the finish line a long way ahead of him and won Liège – Bastogne – Liège 2012. 20 seconds later, a visibly ailing Vincenzo Nibali crossed the finish line. Third in the group sprint, Iglinski's teammate and winner of the Amstel Gold Race , Enrico Gasparotto .
