The Lüxeberg is an extinct volcanic cone at a good 220 m above sea level. NN , which is located on the southern edge of the Eifel in the Wittlich valley .
Word origin
Lüxe comes from "lützel", the Middle High German word for "small". The Lüxeberg is also popularly called "Lüxemberg" or "Lüxemkopf".
Dismantling
Sandstone used to be extracted from two quarries on Lüxeberg , from which the town centers of the neighboring villages of Neuerburg and Bombogen consist almost exclusively. The broken basalt was mainly used as packing layer and gravel for road construction.
Historical meaning
On the east side there is a small cave, which was to serve as a shelter for the residents of the surrounding villages who were under attack during World War II .
Todays use
On the summit of the Lüxeberg there is now an elevated water tank for the places Bombogen and Wengerohr .
